‘Cardio vs. Weights’ – What do our Fitness Instructors think?

They are two of the most popular workout types, but it is hard to know which one is a better use of your time.
We had 59 people take part in a poll on Facebook to find out which they thought was the best and we wanted to share the results with you. It was a close one but the exercise type that stole the lead was…

We caught up with some of our Fitness Instructors to find out their opinions on Cardio and Weights.
It is very important that you are doing both Cardio and Weights as part of your exercise plan. The older you get, your muscle mass does deteriorate, so it is especially important that weights are part of your routine.
If you want to get better at running, then cardio is more beneficial. If you want to get stronger then weights is a better use of your time.
If you want to burn calories then both are brilliant to do. I recommend that you do what you enjoy when you’re trying to burn calories as you are more likely to stick at it!
Both cardio and weights can help you become healthier and fitter, they both have their benefits when it comes to getting healthy. Both types of exercise burn calories and help to put you in the magic deficit zone which can enable weight loss. Cardio is good for your cardiovascular system and burning calories, weight lifting is great for building muscle mass and stopping muscle deterioration and it helps you burn calories for longer, even after you’ve finished your workout.
Although a weight training session doesn’t always burn as many calories as a good cardio session, it will help you to burn more calories at rest. For example muscle mass burns more calories at rest than any other tissues and this includes fat and that is where building muscle is a key ingredient to increasing your resting metabolism (by a small amount depending on gender and other factors). You also can’t expect to lose weight with just exercising you need to look at your diet too, therefore you can see that’s lots of ways to get fit and healthy and you should find the best path for you but as a beginner you need cardio and weights in your routine as they are both good for you.
It’s all about finding the right workout for you and my preferred workout would be a mix of weight training using split days and HIIT workouts, as this works best for my body and for my enjoyment as you definitely need to enjoy what you do.
